Formula Used to Calculate VIT CGPA
VIT University uses this formula to calculate students' CGPA is:
CGPA = ∑ ( Grade Points × Credits ) / ∑(Credits)
How Formula Works
- Multiplying the grade points of each course by its corresponding credits to find the weighted points.
- Summing up all the weighted points.
- Dividing the total weighted points by the total credits for all courses.

Let's assume a student took four-semester courses with these grades and credit hours:

Each course GPA is calculated by multiplying grade points by credit hours:
- Course 1 GPA = 7 * 2 = 14
- Course 2 GPA = 8 * 4 = 32
- Course 3 GPA = 5 * 4 = 20
- Course 4 GPA = 6 * 3 = 18
Calculate the SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average ). Add all course GPAs and divide by total credit hours:
Semester GPA = (14+32+20+18) / (2+4+4+3) = 84 / 13 = 6.46
SGPA = 6.46
Assuming the student’s first-semester SGPA was 7.8, calculate the CGPA in the second semester.
- First Semester SGPA = 7.8 (Assumed)
- Second Semester SGPA = 6.46
Calculate your CGPA by adding up all 12 credit hours from both semesters.
- CGPA = (7.8 × 12 ) + (6.46 × 12) / (12 + 12)
- CGPA = (93.6 + 77.52) / 24 = 171.12 / 24 = 7.13
Your CGPA of two semesters is = 7.13
